This second post of my Paint Colour Series is the opposite design trick from my last post. By using darker tones on the smaller areas the lighter areas appear larger. Most people want to create as much light and space in a room as they can. Using lighter colours on the walls, which is the biggest space, with a darker tone on doors, trim and baseboards is the easiest way to achieve this.

This method can create some welcome drama into the space and is ideal if you want to make a bold statement. Keep in mind it has the effect of framing each room and separating spaces. As it happens, the 2020 colour from Sherwin Williams is Naval and would be an excellent choice for adding some drama and room definition into a space.

Three ideas to consider:

  1. Hague Blue on trim, baseboards and doors in combination with Pink Ground on walls.
  2. Drop Cloth on trim, baseboards and doors in combination with Shadow White on walls.
  3. Lamp Room Gray on trim, baseboards and doors in combination with Pale Hound on walls.

Paint is a fast and very effective way to change the energy and feel of a room. I’ve given you a few suggestions, but there are literally hundreds of options for you to choose from.

If you are not sure where to start, I can quickly take all of the decision making out of your hands and create a colour palette for your home or office.
